I have officially moove!! After much heaving, many grunts, kicks, screams, broken backs, and sore muscles, the furniture and junk that used to be in my old house is officially in my new house! And talking to many a telstra person we even got our phone connected!!

I read in Romans 8:13
“For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”

Its a bit shocking really when you let it sink in. It brings out the mean streak in christianity. (shock horror: “Theres a mean streak???”) Kill or be killed. We are of course not talking about killing other people. But killing the sin in our life, the “deeds of the body”. You shall be killing sin, or it shall be killing you.

How? How do you do it? How does it happen? It happens by the Spirit. That is how you put to death the deeds of the body, by the Spirit. Without the “by the spirit” in there it may as well be some diet or exercise program, or something, people are disciplining thier deeds all the time in our society. Dont eat this, dont touch that. But what makes what Paul is talking about different is that it is “by the Spirit”.

The Spirit does it but we have to do it too (“YOU put to death the deeds of the body”). Sounds paradoxical. But it is what Paul is saying. If Paul were to say to us. It is the Spirit who puts to death the deeds of the body, then we wouldnt get out of bed in the morning. We wouldn’t do anything!! And on the flipside, if Paul were to say. You put to death the deeds of the body, and not mention the Spirits work. Then we would all become legalists, trying to work our own way into Gods favour.

It is both our work and the Spirits work, together that changes us to be more like the people we are meant to be. The Process of killing sin. Is the task of true Christians. Study Gods word, and ask that God would empower you with his Spirit for the task today.

God Bless,
Geoff
