In a few places recently, I’ve had to tick my employment status. Normally I’d just tick the “Home Duties” box and be on my merry way with the rest of the survey, but the last few times there hasn’t been this option. So where did I fit?
Well, I’m a student learning about my kids and being a wife, about how to run a household and how to fit healthy eating and new shoes into a single-income budget. I’m also forcing myself to learn learning a bit about kids craft, because I’m pretty sure my conscience is telling me it’s written in the invisible ink section of the mummy’s job description. Since I don’t get a flashy laminated student card to go into my wallet, I don’t think the above experience counts. Perhaps I could make myself a flashy laminated card. I wonder if I’d get half-price movie tickets and public transport?
I’ve got a Bachelors degree and have experience in that field, so am qualified as a “professional“, but I’m not currently employed in that field. I’m also pretty professional when it comes to dealing with toddler tantrums now.
Executive? Well, I’m an executive chef in our house. I’m also an executive assistant to my husband at times (I’m pretty awesome at filling out forms and making appointments). I make pretty good executive decisions when no one else will. Probably doesn’t cut it though.
Sales? Oh, I’m a pro at this! I sell stuff all the time. “Oh, yum! How tasty is this brocoli?!”, “Isn’t it a gorgeous day. Let’s go hang the washing together. Won’t that be fun?”, “You are such a great helper. Whilst mummy does her vacuuming, you can vacuum with this one. It’s the perfect size for you!” (hands son a dust-buster). I also get a bit excited about products I love (Ikea, Birkenstocks, Huggies), and have seen the instances of people I know buying those products afterwards. (Can you blame me? How pretty and fun are these shoes!)
I’m pretty good at managing stuff, so I suppose you could call me a Manager of sorts. I manage our family budget, I manage nappy changes and dirty clothes. I manage to clean up toilet-training accidents and food that has been spilt on the floor. I also mange to cook dinner and hang out clothes with a baby on my hip.
Skilled worker? I’m pretty skilled. I can hand-stitch up clothes or broken toys, paint a fence, patch a hole in the wall, complete most household tasks whilst holding a baby, change a light bulb, plant a vegie patch etc. If I could google-it, I’d have the skills to do it.
Entrepreneur? Now, this is a possibility. Otherwise, I’m starting to run out of options. For this one I consulted www.dictionary.com as a reference.
en·tre·pre·neur Pronounced [ahn-truh-pruh-nur, -noor;] As a noun there are 2 options.
“1. a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk.”
Well, there’s plenty of initiative and risk-taking in our household. B1 tries to convince me that he can have an icecream for breakfast. That’s both initiative and risk-taking in my books. I also let B1 eat spaghetti without a bib. Now THERE’s a risk! Since I organise and manage the enterprise, perhaps this is where I fit? Ok, I think I’m stretching it a bit. Surely I was close though, right?
“2. an employer of productive labor; contractor.”
I’d say I employ my kiddies to do plenty of labor. I guess at the end of the day though, B1 taking half an hour to vacuum our loungeroom with his little dust-buster hardly constitutes “productive labor” in the grand scheme of things. So I will have to scrub this off the list too.
So looking at the above, I guess I could argue until I turn blue in the face that I’m a Skilled Professional Executive Entrepreneurs Sales Manager And Student (with a full-time study load, of course!)
But at the end of the day, technically I’m unemployed! (And that’s ok!)
Linking up with Jess from Diary of Stay At Home Mum for IBOT. I hope it is Tuesday, I’m losing track a bit at the moment. I’d better go check the calendar… and the Organised Housewife for her Love It, Link It! 🙂

The problem with ticking “domestic duties” is that it doesn’t fully describe what a SAHM does. If only that was all to the role….
Companies should really headhunt mothers, where else will they get staff so incredibly skilled and intelligent? Sure beats hiring a suck up junior!
There should be a box where we can just tick “awesome”!
Every mother can multitask in a way no man could ever think about. If my husband has said once, “one thing at a time!” when I ask him to do 3 things, he’s said it 50 times. I have no trouble doing 3 things at a time.
Headhunters should consider this talent 🙂
I love this! I hate being confined to a box. We have so many skills that would benefit corporations -y et they don’t often look fondly on ‘home duties’. I think next time I have to tick my occupation, I will tick multiple boxes.
Ugh, this bugs me! I am ready to get back into the work force but I have a 9yr gap on my resume, 5+years of that because I’ve been raising children and being a SAHM (most of the rest is because I was overseas or pregnant). But if I went into a job interview with someone else who doens’t have the 9yr gap, even if we both have no experience in the field, it would not be me who would get the job, even though I could probably easily do the job as I do a hell of a lot more as a SAHM than sitting on my butt watching The Bold And The Beautiful! But because I’ve just been raising children nothing that I’ve done in that time counts because I’m not fitting inside their boxes, nor do I have any “experience”. And I’m getting off my rambling soapbox now, lol.
Ha ha. I love “if I can google it, I can do it” Sounds so much like what happens here!
This is so true! Great post 🙂
Oh I love it! So very true!
On my younger twos births certificate, it reads ‘domestic goddess’ as my occupation.
I can’t wait until Bailey gets married and rolls his eyes when he sees that 😉
Oh so true! I think I’d be a much better employee now than before I had kids… they may as well just make me the boss! I’d cut the crap and just get the job done! Great post.
