B1, my 3 year old son, has quite a varied wardrobe. He has jeans, denim shorts, boardshorts, elastic pullup shorts, trackpants…. he has singlets, tshirts, collared shirts, … and quite dressy shirts. Whilst at home he lives in the k-mart and big-w clothes I buy on clearance, generally for $1-3each, but when he goes out I try to dress him in better clothes.
As I’m quite a “clearance shopper”, and love a good bargain, I have managed to pick him up some nice clothes & licenced clothes quite cheaply (ie. 75% off and more!).
However, B1 has recently decided that he likes to pick his own clothes. And, I used the word “pick” quite intentionally, as he’s quick “picky”.
He has these shorts called “up shorts”. I’m not sure why they’re called “Up shorts”, but they’re shorts with elastic at the waist where they sit above the knee. Oh, somebody help us if his shorts were to touch his knees! The name may have come from toilet training, in taht they were the easy pants to pull “up”, but we’re not sure.
This actually started by him doing a “bend test”, where after he would put on his pants he would do a squat to see if he could bend. I’ve lost count of the number of times we had a very frustrated mummy and tantrums&tears (B1 of course, not mummy) because “Can’t bend, mummy, can’t bend!”.
And so I tried to find him more and nicer looking “up shorts”. He used to have a specific brand of shorts when he was in Size 2, and they were perfect. But as soon as he went up to a Size 3, he changed from the “Toddler” range to the “Boys” range, and the equivalent pair that I can find are now past his knees. OH DEAR! And so the serach continues. For now, we are just making the most of the “up shorts” that we’ve got, and I’m keeping a look out for more (though as you’ll see below, there is a common theme …)
So, why am I writing this? This is my official defence for when he’s 25 years old and he comes to me with his toddler photos as says, “I can’t believe you dressed me like that, Mum? What were you thinking!”. Trust me, most of the time I wouldn’t dress you like that to go out either, sweetheart. Sometimes, yes. Usually, no.

Oh dear I have one boy who had to wear certain clothes – thank fully he is much better now at 6 –
I’d buy some iron on tape to raise the ‘bar’ at the risk of offering ASSVICE – just saying – makes life easier.
Oh, I know what you mean. Miss 3 loves to choose her own outfits. During the week, I generally let her go for it… with the stipulation regarding long-sleeved or short-sleeved.
On Sundays, I offer a choice of two dresses (with matching accessories as required). Sometimes this works. Other times we have fights… really not worth the fights!
I have that issue with my hubby. Will not wear shorts below the knee. Good luck
My 2 boys are pretty cruisey when it comes to clothes but the girls are very particular. Sometimes it drives me crazy and I cringe when I see what clothing combo they’ve chosen. They think they look glorious though – I guess that’s the main thing. 🙂
What a cutie!! My poor boys have to deal with shorts past their knees as some point (I always buy them a size bigger than they need) then by the time they are above the knee I realise they are probably due for some new ones!!! 😉 Good luck with your search!
Up shorts! I love it. That made me laugh.
My toddler gets around in a pink tutu and black converse runners. Eclectic tastes these little ones!
So cute! I am kind of dreading the time when my Miss takes more of an interest in clothes- I like picking them for her! 🙂
Defence noted 😉
So very cute though, he definitely knows what he likes!
My oldest girl is so very fussy when it comes to clothes. You boys legs are so cute. Rachel
I hear you! Because in Darwin we never wear much of anything, when I tried to put leggings on miss 19 months yesterday, she cried and tried to pull them off. She couldn’t stand feeling something so close to her skin.
The funny things is I remember the same thing happening with all the others too. Once when down south and it was cold, I couldn’t get them in long sleeved shirts because of the feel of them! They are funny little people!
Oh my gosh. Lol. Alright. Firstly, let me solve your curiosity as to where “Up Shorts” has come from. That would be my eldest daughter. She has been saying it since she was 2. I have never heard another child using it, but as we have spent some lovely time together, it seems the concept has rubbed off 🙂 Up Shorts are short shorts. As opposed to Down Pants which are long pants, or jeans. There are also Up Shirts which are short sleeved or tank tops, and Down Shirts which are long sleeved. Be thankful you don’t have to have the skirt discussion 😉 xo
